Traditional rug hooking as we know it today is an artform that many believe originated in New England and the Maritime Provinces of Canada. Maine played an important role in this history. For instance, a tin peddler by the name of Edwards Sands Frost of Biddeford created the first commercial patterns for rug hooking in the 1800's. Cushing dyes originated in the Foxcroft area about the same time and are still sold under that name to this day.
The rugs and patterns offered here are created by Maine artisans to celebrate this tradition. We offer an eclectic group of hooked items with each artist producing her/his own style and color choices. Most of these rugs are one-of-a-kind. The material is wool and most are hand dyed by the artist, hooked on quality backing material (linen), and finished by hand so your purchases will last for generations with proper care.
We have made a pledge to sell supplies and rugs that are MADE IN MAINE to the extent possible.
Please respect the time and talent of our artisans and do not copy their work. Purchasing their items allows them to keep designing for your pleasure.
Enjoy your visit and we hope you like what you see. Be sure to check back often as new products and artists will be added as they become available.
